Daniel Kambere was born on the 11 September 1964 in Oicha, near Beni,
in what was then Zaire. He attended his primary school and
part of his secondary school in Oicha and Beni, and also completed
his humanitarian studies there.
In 1986-1989 he completed his higher education in Plastic Arts
at the painting department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa.

Professional activities

1980 - 1986       Before attending the Academy of Fine Art, Kambere realized approximately one hundred popular works (paintings) on the subject of the education of the peasant (e.g. struggle against poaching; struggle against alcoholism in Kivu).

1991-present     He is a member of the Congolese Association of Plastic Artists.

1991-present     He is a member of the “ATELIERS BOTEMBE”, a group of artists classified

among the innovators of Contemporary Congolese Art. In this group Kambere holds the task of Exhibition Superintendent.

1997                 He is appointed responsible for practical works at the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa.

1999                 He carries out four important wall paintings in his native province Kivu:

In the church of Lukanga: Les mains de Dieu (God’s hands, 5x5m)

In the cinema hall of Muhanga (WAIBRAHIMU plan): Tous (Everybody), Paix-Unité (Peace-Unity, 2.5x1.8m), Crucification (Cruicifixion, 2.5x1.8m)

1991- 2007        He takes part in numerous cultural events in Congo and abroad (e.g. Brazaville, Equatorial Guinea, Uganda, China, Senegal, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, U.S.A. [New York, Washington D.C., Maryland, Rhode Island, Vermont).

 Inspiration:

Kambere draws his inspiration from black African art, from daily life (topicality) and from contemporary art in general. In the last years he has also turned his attention to the material assembly technique, and works on elaborating a particular pictorial grammar: the proper use of soft and hard materials, like canvas, sheets, wood, paper, metals, etc. This aim originates from his anxiety to ‘reconcile man with himself’ for the reconstruction of a world based on human values.

Ambitions:

Kambere’s ambitions are working, exhibiting and traveling, as well as sharing experiences with people from other cultures around the world. Traveling teaches a lot. Kambere acknowledges having learned very much during the Biennials of Brazzaville 1994 and Dakar 1996, where he had the opportunity to meet and exhibit with renowned African artists such as Ousman Sow, Fode Kamara, Vive Diba, Iba Nd’yaye, Mustapha Dime, Amadou Sow, Papa Ibra Tall (Senegal), Glover (Ghana), Abdoulaye Konate (Mali), Kra Ng’uessan (Ivory Coast), Zerium (Ethiopia), Mohamed Kacimi (Morocco), Pascal Martine Tayou (Cameroon), and Georges Mb’ourdu (Gabon)…

Reviews:

“…among many painters, it is now necessary to count on some young academicians, including KAMBERE, a revelation of the 90s …the reading of his paintings doesn’t come to an end at first sight, when lines go on in succession, the red, yellow and blue colours …build up highly significant aggregations and carry the reader into the beyond through the way of Africanism, in which everything is sign and symbol”
